Ciguatoxin 1b, a type of ciguatoxin, is a voltage-sensitive Na+ channel activator. Ciguatoxin 1b shifts channel activation to more negative membrane potentials, partially inhibits channel inactivation, and increases Na+ permeability and cellular excitability. Ciguatoxin 1b induces tetrodotoxin-sensitive intracellular Na+ elevation in bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin cells, followed by cytoplasmic Ca2+ elevation, thereby promoting soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE)-dependent catecholamine secretion. Ciguatoxin 1b is applicable to research related to ciguatera poisoning[1].
