Method A of Scheme I1 was used to prepare the 3-substituted compounds 51-55, 57, and 58 (Table 11). Acylhydrazide 49, which was prepared by addition of ethyl lithioacetate to N- benzyl-4-piperidinone, followed by condensation with hydrazine, was converted to 5014 by way of a Curtius rearrangement.
