1. 1.4 M methylmagnesium bromide (THF/toluene solution) (36.9 mL) was added slowly and dropwise to a solution of 5-bromo-2-fluorobenzaldehyde (10.0 g, 49.26 mmol) in anhydrous ethyl ether (60 mL) at 0 °C. 2. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0 °C for 30 min. 3. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction was quenched sequentially with water (50 mL) and 1 N HCl (10 mL). The reaction was quenched with water (50 mL) and 1N HCl (10 mL). 4. The organic phase was separated and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. 5. The desiccant was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 1-(5-bromo-2-fluorophenyl)ethanol (10.8 g, 100% yield). 6. The product was confirmed by mass spectrometry (ESI) at m/z 218 [M + 1]+, 220 [M + 2]+ .
