The intensity of the dielectric absorption in long-chain aliphatic esters and other dipolar aliphatic solids depends on chemical purity and physical perfection. The addition of small amounts of homologous esters increased the number of lattice sites at which molecular rotation can occur, the effect of a longer homologoue being greater than that of a shorter. The absorption intensity changed with annealing and the results of experiments with a particular ester are discussed.
