ChEBI: Cefcapene is a cephalosporin compound having (carbamoyloxy)methyl and N-[(2Z)-2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)pent-2-enoyl]amino side-groups. It is used (generally as the corresponnding pivaloyloxymethyl ester prodrug) as an oral antibacterial. It has a role as an antibacterial drug. It is a cephalosporin, a carboxylic acid, a carbamate ester, an enamide, a member of 1,3-thiazoles and a secondary carboxamide.Antimicrobial activity
A semisynthetic cephalosporin formulated for oral administration as the prodrug ester, cefcapene pivoxil. Activity and uses are similar to those of cefditoren.Available in Japan.
Pharmacokinetics
Cefcapene is a semisynthetic third-generation cephalosporin with antibacterial activity. Cefcapene binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and in reshaping the cell wall during growth and division. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis.6436055
