Many redox processes are rate limited by the kinetics of the electron-transfer rates and not the rates of diffusion. These heterogeneous electron-transfer rates can be dramatically controlled by the composition of the electrode double layer with respect to specific adsorption of electroinactive inorganic ions and surface active organic species. The control of these species can be employed for a variety of analytical applications.
