Cyclic phosphenium (1a) and arsenium (1b) cations are formed either by treatment of germylene 2b with ECl₃ (E = P, As) or via the metathetical reaction of LiN(Bu^t)CCN(Bu^t)Li with ECl₃ and the structures of 1a and 1b are compared with those of pertinent saturated analogues.
