Abstract

The fluorescence of a new aminocyanonaphthalene exhibits exquisite sensitivity to its environment and responds to a solvent change from water to hexane with greater than a 100-fold increase in intensity and 100 nm shift in max.em. These properties should support many applications including the detection of abasic sites within duplex DNA as illustrated below.
