The possibility of using liquid chromatography with anodic amperometric detection has been investigated for the determination of cefotaxime and its two main decomposition products. The electrochemical behaviour of these compounds was monitored using a glassy carbon electrode. An optimum signal to noise ratio was obtained at a +0.95 V potential (vs. SCE). At this potential, the detection limit was found to be in the picomole range and was equivalent to or better than UV detection. Linearity and repeatability results showed that anodic amperometric detection could be used as an alternative detection mode for stability studies.
