Abstract

In search of an economic and energy conserving method for the synthesis of lithium rich cathode materials, an effective, quick and simple solution combustion method has been adopted for the synthesis of nano-sized Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2, which is today's most praised positive electrode material for lithium ion batteries. This energy conservative route facilitates homogeneous atomic-level mixing of the precursors resulting in a high quality product. In a short duration of time, nanoscale, phase-pure Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2 can be produced which is converted to an electro active high performing cathode material on calcination for less than 2 h at 850 °C. The synthesized lithium-rich phase delivers a reversible capacity of 260 mA h g−1 with superior cycling stability and exhibits good rate performance.
