Protonation of a ruthenium hydride containing the hemilabile ligand PPh₂py gave a complex with a three-centre dihydrogen bond (Ru–H···H–Py₂), and this system exhibits a fast proton/hydride interchange and is a very active catalyst for D⁺–H₂ exchange.
