Abstract

Van der Waals heterostructures are composed of two-dimensional materials and represent a new kind of exciton material with attractive luminescence properties. They have inspired many applications including valley-polarized, single-photon emitting, and optically pumped lasers. These kinds of heterostructure light sources with versatile functionality are of great significance for realizing high integration and low power on-chip light sources, especially in wavelength expansion. Although more and more efforts with different aspects are being placed on the investigation of infrared luminescence, a systematic and complete picture in this area is lacking. In this paper, the recent progress on infrared luminescence in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures is reviewed, including some luminescence mechanisms and properties and applications, as well as the challenges and perspectives for future studies.
