NIR luminescence for the detection of metal ions and nitro explosives based on a grape-like nine-nuclear Nd(iii) nanocluster†

Abstract

Two 9-metal lanthanide nanoclusters [Ln9L1(L2)2(OAc)15(OH)8(H2O)2(DMF)] (Ln = Nd (1) and Gd (2)) were synthesized using a long Schiff base ligand with a Ph-O-Ph-O-Ph backbone (H2L1) and a short tridentate aromatic ligand (H2L2). 1 and 2 show grape-like structures with sizes of about 11 × 17 × 22 Å. In 1, the chromogenic ligands can sensitize the NIR luminescence of Nd3+ ions. Interestingly, 1 exhibits luminescence response to both metal ions and nitro explosives, and shows high sensitivity to Cd2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and Co2+ ions and explosive HMX at the ppm level.
