The biosynthesis of lobeline in intact Lobelia inflata plants was studied. The piperidine nucleus is derived from lysine by way of a symmetrical intermediate. Both C6–C2 units are derived from phenylalanine. Acetate is shown not to be involved in the biosynthesis.
