Evidence for intimate ion-pair formation in the addition of acids to olefins

Abstract
Evidence is presented that the addition of acids to α-pinene involves addition of un-ionised acid to give an intimate ion pair, which favours elimination over addition when the counter ion is not strongly nucleophilic.
