The preparation, X-ray crystal structures and electrochemical properties of bis(2-cyano-1,2-ethanedithiolate)nickelate [Ni(edt-CN)2]2−/−· are described for both oxidation states together with the singlet–triplet behaviour of the PPh4+ salt of the paramagnetic [Ni(edt–CN)2]−· complex.
