该颜料具有黄光红或大红色相，耐溶剂性能、耐酸/碱性优良。主要用于塑料如PVC、PS、ABS、聚烯烃着色，在HDPE中耐热300℃（1/3SD），但影响尺寸变形，适用于聚丙烯的原浆着色，在软质PVC中耐迁移，具有中等着色力；也推荐用于涂料、汽车涂料，耐罩光漆，耐热180℃；用于高档印墨，如PVC薄膜及金属装饰印墨、层压塑料薄膜等着色。

将2-氯-5-三氟甲基苯胺在盐酸介质中，加入亚硝酸钠水溶液，进行重氮化反应；重氮盐与2-羟基-3-萘甲酸进行偶合反应，生成的单偶氮染料在邻二氯苯中与氯化亚砜进行反应，转变为酰氯衍生物；再与2,5-二氯-1,4-苯二胺进行缩合反应，生成偶氮缩合粗品，再经颜料化处理制备出C.I.颜料红242。
